Fred Rogers

Fred McFeely Rogers (March 20, 1928 – February 27, 2003) was an American television personality, musician, puppeteer, writer, producer, and Presbyterian minister. He was known as the creator, composer, producer, head writer, showrunner and host of the preschool television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (1968–2001). The show featured Rogers’s kind, neighborly persona,[1] which nurtured his connection to the audience.[2] Rogers would end each program by telling his viewers, “You’ve made this day a special day, by just your being you. There’s no person in the whole world like you; and I like you just the way you are.“

“You rarely have time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are.” Fred Rogers.

Four types of wealth

There are 4 types of wealth:
1. Financial wealth [money]
2. Social wealth [status]
3. Time wealth [freedom]
4. Physical wealth [health]

Be wary of jobs that lure you in with 1 and 2, but rob you of 3 and 4.

Escaping Method Prison

The paper “Escaping Method Prison” by Ivar Jacobson was honored in “The best agile paper 2018”. (this),

Key Takeaways

  • An understanding of the concept method prison with its side effects gurus, method wars and the zig-zag path, and why it is “the most foolish thing in the world”.
  • Escaping method prisons by adopting the Essence standard and getting a common ground on top of which to deal with your methods.
  • The team gets a) practices easier to teach/learn/change/compare, b) practices easy to apply giving guidance in daily work and stimulating teamwork, and c) a practice library, from which practices can be selected and composed to entire methods.
  • The executives get a) the organization to move from essentially being a craft to essentially being an engineering discipline, b) a forever learning organization with a practice library that continuously is improved as teams learn more and more, and c) a tool to measure progress and health for existing projects independent on which method is being used.
  • The industry gets industrial scale agile – from craft to engineering.

(Agile Crisis)

(Agile Crisis)

Have we lost the original meaning of agile?

Originally, agile meant valuing individuals and interactions, working software, customer collaboration, and responding to change. Agile was about cross-functional teams working closely together to innovate new products or solutions that couldn’t have been developed any other way.

These days agile seems to be about

  • improving productivity,
  • reducing work in process,
  • Increasing velocity in any way possible,
  • holding teams accountable for finishing everything they say they will, and,
  • doing just enough that an organization can call itself agile without really being agile.

Many of these are good things. But they are the candy manufacturer version of agile: sweeter and easier to sell.

But, ultimately, these are as unrelated to the original meaning of agile ….

As you work to transform your organization or team with agile, be sure you remain true its principles. That’s the surest way to succeed with agile,

Mike Cohn
