I believe it is the responsibility of the speaker/writer to be clear, not the listener/reader.

Always write from the point of view of the reader: what does the reader need. How to do this?

(۱) Use words you know the reader understands. In academic writing, you can basically use lots of technical words.
(۲) Define words that you doubt the reader knows.
(۳) I never want a reader to have to reread a sentence. I will do all the word so they understand it the first time.
